Meaning of Entrepreneurship for Women

Written by:

I have coached hundreds of entrepreneurs during the past six years, mostly women, and I have noticed that their motivations to start and run a business are pretty similar. They include making a difference, having the flexibility to create one’s schedule, being able to take time off to take care of family’s needs, making extra income to support one’s family, creating or trying to create a more balanced life, to name a few. I would like to learn from our readers and subscribers, what does it mean to you to own and run your own business? Add your comments below.

Flexibility is a crucial aspect of the decision to start one’s own business, particularly for women. Many of us are mothers and want to attend school performances and tennis matches. I don’t mind working at ten at night. This also allows me to slip in exercise time, which, as I age, has become virtually a second job.

    Thanks for this format, Elisa.

To me it’s helping other moms and dads to spend quality time with their children while earning a possible 5-6 figure income p/t or f/t. Living a quality and healthy lifestyle.

Hi Elisa, at first, my motivation to start my business was simply economics and the hope to financial freedom. However, as most entrepreneurs will find, it’s not as easy as it sounds; otherwise, everyone will be doing it successfully! I have learned during the course of my several businesses that one of the reasons I’ve stayed in business goes beyond my immediate intention of making money, albeit that remains my long-term goal. Currently, my business goals revolve around opportunities – they are my short-term objectives. Having experienced failure several times, I am now more eager to listen, pay attention to the forces around me, and take advantage of the opportunities that come my way. In a way it’s a learning process allover again, but one that I’m eager to take and happy to experience. Hence my reasons for staying in business now includes the favorable junctures of circumstances that will afford me a good chance for advancement towards my long-term goal.

Being a woman entrepreneur is about independence and standing in your power. Although being a business owner is not always easy as it requires alot of hard work, being chief cook and bottle washer all rolled into one, but the rewards are endless. Knowing that you are the one that sets the rules that you play by and live by as well as how you choose to use your voice in the world is very empowering. You and you alone are responsible for getting clients, keeping clients, creating your own financial worth and most important demonstrating integrity and honesty in all your transactions is empowering. When you can finally stand tall and say, I am taking responsibility for what I have created in my professional life, that is saying to the world, I am a female entrepreneur and I am proud of what I have accomplished and I walk with my head high knowing that no one can take this away from me.
